Editorial: The Homeless In America
America's communities have a hidden shame. We label them the homeless and do little or nothing to see why they are homeless or how we can help them improve their circumstances. Our politicians know most of them don't vote or can't vote for one reason or another and literally let them starve and even die sleeping in the woods or an underpass or wherever they find themselves.
Many of these folks are ill, physically, mentally or both. And they are truly abused. Abused by their country, their society and their fellow human beings. Instead of helping them many if not most towns all over America pass ordinances banning them or limiting their presence. The politico's solution seems to be, if the homeless are not seen, there is no problem.Recently I was in Palm Beach Florida, where the big wigs tried to prevent a local church from even giving the homeless a place to sleep. All that in one of America's richest counties.
The homeless need help. They need your help. They need you to reach and offer them assistance in any form you can. They need you to pressure your local politicians to provide options including food, shelter and more. They need you to care and demonstrate that care by doing something to help.I've listened to a lot of excuses (especially by politicians living on the fat of the land and your taxes) and have not heard many solutions.
Please add your comments and suggestions about the homeless as a comment to this post.
